Tech Transfer 2012
Foundation for MSME Clusters and IKP Knowledge Park to host first-of-its-kind international technology transfer platform for Indian life-science Industry

It is a known fact that many technologies are stagnated in the hands of ‘haves’, waiting to be licensed-out and/or commercialized. Classical technology transfer has not been as successful in India as it has been in developed economies, because of perceived wide gap between industry requirements and knowledge creators, inaccessibility of information, lack of communication and mutual trust, paucity of suitable platform for interaction, and misalignment between ‘technology-push’ and ‘market-pull’, to name a few. It is therefore necessary to address the above gaps through creating a wider platform for technology transfer, as one of the prominent features/offerings of the innovation ecosystem in India.

In order to fill the above gap, FMC and IKP Knowledge Park (IKP), Hyderabad have geared up to organize an international technology transfer facilitation exercise for the benefit of Indian life-science industry, especially MSMEs. This yearlong exercise has been undertaken in 6 phases, viz. Market Survey; Technology Scouting; Partnership with National and International Agencies, Institutions and Organizations; Technology Screening; two Technology shows, and Follow-up and Transfer of Technologies. To bring pragmatism and globalism in the platform, FMC and IKP have partnered with the Steinbeis Centre for Technology Transfer India, Institute of Intellectual Property, Research and Development (IIPRD), New Delhi, and other international technology transfer facilitators based at various countries at the world.

Key decision makers and industry representatives will be participating in the workshops from across India. The workshops will be conducted on track basis with technology presentations in the areas of Bio-pharmaceuticals, Pharmaceuticals (APIs + Intermediates + Formulations), Diagnostics and Medical Devices. FMC and IKP would also attempt to facilitate financial assistance for technology acquisition/licensing by interested companies.

Surya Rao, Vice President, Technology Licensing Office, IKP Knowledge Park said “we have put together an event that has excellent chances of success because of the extensive groundwork we have done into understanding the viewpoints of Indian companies on risk tolerance, technology valuation, growth ambitions, deal negotiations, etc. This has helped us accumulate technologies that fit the particular requirements of Indian companies in various stages of development”.

Around 200 industry representatives from 150+ life-science companies of India and abroad are expected to participate in both the Shows. A customized mechanism has been devised to capture Expressions of Interest from industry towards their interests in technologies. FMC and IKP will follow up with the Expressions of Interest, and take them forward towards possible transfer of technology. India has around 20,000 life-science enterprises, including large, medium, and small. We are expecting to address requirements of select 2000 players. Accordingly, we envisage 50-100 technology transactions to take place, said Mr. Sourabh Gargav, Manager, FMC.

Realizing the expected value that the overall project would generate, it is envisioned that IKP Knowledge Park is all set to emerge as a one-stop solution window for technology scouting / screening / licensing requirements of the Indian life-science industry.

“It is a first-of-its-kind platform, wherein live technologies will be presented directly to the industry. The technologies have been aggregated from across the globe to suit the requirements of Indian MSMEs. We hope to offer Tech Transfer 2012 as a one-stop shop for most of the technology related requirements of Indian life-science industry” said Dr. Tamal Sarkar, Director, FMC.

“This event leverages IKP Knowledge Park’s deep expertise in innovation development, technology transfer and strong network of partners along with FMC’s expertise in economic/cluster development” said Deepanwita Chattopadhyaya, CEO, IKP Knowledge Park
